LAST DANCE FOR CLIVE'S EGO

January 12, 2009 --

THIS could be the last year for Clive Davis' legendary pre-Grammy party. Last week, he announced he'd throw the $1 million-plus gala next month, not with its usual sponsor - Davis' company, Sony Music Group - but with the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences (NARAS), which hands out the Grammys. An insider said, "Sony told Clive it wasn't going to pay for the party this year. It was a bad year for them, and [Sony chief] Howard Stringer feels the party doesn't help sell any albums and only serves to promote Clive's ego . . . Clive then tried to get his own sponsors but couldn't, so NARAS stepped in. But forget about next year. It's over," said our source. Last year, Alicia Keys, Fergie, the Foo Fighters and Leona Lewis performed. This year, Whitney Houston, a Davis discovery in the '80s, will sing. Her comeback album drops in March. Reps for Davis and Sony didn't return calls.

Whitney Houston is Back, New CD in March Says Clive Davis

Posted by Ryan Brockington at 6:44 AM on January 13, 2009

The music industry's hottest party in town -- Clive Davis' Annual Pre-Grammy Party -- is set to be the golden ticket this year, with word that Whitney Houston will start her official comeback at the bash.

The untimely Ms. Houston is set to perform brand new tracks completely live from her upcoming album. Whitney's mentor, Clive Davis, also announced the new album will be due in March. Is anyone else freaking the Shasta out a little?

Who knows what her new sound is like (Clive?) Who knows if she's still got it (Clive?) Who knows if she's gonna have some mid-crack breakdown (probably not Clive.) Either way, I am going to be on the phone all day trying to figure out how my ears can get a peak at her new work. The poopy part is, it's a private party and the place will be flanked with paparazzi and fans, so that probably means the public folk like us have got no shot at this glittertastic event.

Also performing will be Jazmine Sullivan, Leona Lewis, Kelly Clarkson and possibly (still rumored) Jennifer Hudson.

WHITNEY TO PERFORM

January 16, 2009 --

IT'S official - Whitney Houston "will, barring any physical ailments, perform at Clive Davis' pre-Grammy party," a rep for Davis told Page Six. This will mark the first time Houston, whose golden voice was once ravaged by drug use, has performed onstage in front of a crowd in years. The party Davis is co-hosting with NARAS at the Beverly Hilton on Feb. 7 will also feature performances by Jennifer Hudson - who hasn't sung since her mother, brother and nephew were slain in October - and Sean Combs. Davis' office is apparently getting calls from people with offers of over $20,000 to attend. But it's a no go - if you're not on the list, you're not getting in.

The official label on Clive Davis' famed gala this year: Grammy

By Edna Gundersen, USA TODAY

If you can't compete, co-opt.
The Recording Academy's week-long festivities running up to the Grammy Awards have never touted anything as flashy as the star-studded soiree Clive Davis has hosted for 30 years.

Until this year, when the music mogul's famed blowout became an official member of the Grammy family. Now dubbed the Pre-Grammy Gala, Saturday's celebrity shindig in the Beverly Hilton remains the hottest ticket in Hollywood, as much for its seismic schmooze as its top-shelf performers.

Confirmed guests include Quincy Jones, Britney Spears, Rihanna, Bill Maher, Missy Elliott, will.i.am, Babyface, T-Pain, Busta Rhymes, the Foo Fighters, Gladys Knight and Chris Tucker.

Whitney Houston, returning from self-imposed exile and a messy divorce, will take the stage. So will Jennifer Hudson, emerging further into the spotlight after the October murders of her mother, brother and nephew.

During the event, the Recording Academy will present its President's Merit Award to Davis for his contributions to the music industry. It's the only alteration to a blueprint of merrymaking and song.

"They were not interested in changing anything, so it's still a very personal party," says Davis, Sony Music's chief creative officer. Though his labels and sponsors always bankrolled the event, "it was never a company party. Heads of every record group lay down their armor to be there. We have every motion-picture studio, every TV network, all there to celebrate music."

Drawing luminaries and power brokers from all fields of entertainment, the Davis bash grew grander than talent agent "Swifty" Lazar's legendary Oscar gatherings.

It has served as a platform for emerging acts from Alicia Keys to Leona Lewis, who made her U.S. debut at last year's gala. Davis allows space on the bill for stars outside his stable, including Kanye West.

This year, he's wound up about his diva double-hitter.

Hudson "is feeling as well as can be expected," Davis says. "She is in a frame of mind to really get back to work."

Ditto for Houston, who "just came out of the studio with R. Kelly, and after the Grammys she's going back in with David Foster. The songs are there."

He has also booked the Kings of Leon and rising singer/songwriter BC Jean, who co-wrote Beyoncé's If I Were a Boy. Sean "Diddy" Combs, inspired by the biopic Notorious, will revive I'll Be Missing You, his 1997 tribute to Biggie Smalls, with Faith Evans.

The all-star gathering and media magnet "really fits in our wheelhouse," says Recording Academy president Neil Portnow, who worked for Davis at Arista in the '80s.

With the party now attached to Grammy's neutral terrain, will fellow honchos resent Davis' authority over the marquee and guest list?

"I made calls to the chairs of the other major labels and posed that question," Portnow says. "To a person, everyone said, 'It's great, Clive deserves it.' Clive knows it's not about any one label's artists. He's been broad in selecting talent."

Selecting Davis as this year's Merit recipient was a no-brainer, he adds. The award honors "pillars of the music business, not only the creative side, but the business side," Portnow says. "It's about being visionary and ultimately bringing talent forward, believing in it, sticking with it and creating the most beloved musical artists of our time. That is Clive's legacy. He's 100% still at it."

And in no hurry to quit. Davis, 76, co-produced Kelly Clarkson's upcoming album and is co-producing a new Leona Lewis album with Simon Cowell. He's also working on discs by Rod Stewart and Carlos Santana and preparing to collaborate with Harry Connick Jr.

"It would be easier to give it up if it weren't so exciting and challenging," Davis says. "And great report cards are very gratifying."

Jennifer Hudson to 'surprise duet' at Davis party

By MELINDA NEWMAN - 18 minutes ago

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. (AP) - Days after her triumphant return to the spotlight with her Super Bowl appearance, Jennifer Hudson is booked for Grammy-related events, including a party honoring music mogul Clive Davis.

The singer rehearsed for the Saturday party on Thursday night, singing her hit "Spotlight." Hudson and Davis embraced during the rehearsal.

Davis said Hudson specifically asked to be included in the evening, in which the Recording Academy is honoring the legendary music producer and executive.

"Very touchingly, she called me when she read of my lifetime achievement award, (and said) that she wanted to be part of it, that she wanted to come back with her musical life, so, of course, that is touching," he says. He added that Hudson will also be performing a surprise duet "that people won't see elsewhere."

Hudson is up for four awards at the Grammys and will also perform on the Sunday broadcast. The Oscar-winner is returning to the spotlight this month after being in seclusion since the October slayings of her mother, brother and nephew in Chicago. Her estranged brother-in-law has been charged in the killings.

Other performers at the Davis party are to include the Kings of Leon and Whitney Houston, who is expected to release her long-awaited comeback album this year.

"There's going to be many artists getting up there to party and, hopefully, just doing what they do best, which is to dazzle," Davis said.

Leona Lewis, another Grammy-nominated performer, said she can't wait to see her idol, Houston.

"Ever since I was so young, a little girl, I've idolized her," she says. "She's just amazing. An incredible artist with such long-standing success. I really admire her and I can't wait to see her."

Davis, who is credited with discovering acts such as Houston, Alicia Keys, and Lewis and revitalizing the careers of veterans like Aretha Franklin and Carlos Santana, has held an exclusive pre-Grammy bash for years. This year, the party has become a part of the Recording Academy's week of pre-Grammy events. A longtime executive and music label founder, he is now Sony BMG's chief creative officer.

Whitney Houston Cleans Out The Pipes

Clive Davis has been telling press that he has high hopes for Whitney Houston's big comeback. At his Grammy party, Whitney will be performing at the music heavyweight's annual bash to celebrate the awards to ramp up for her impending new album.

Davis told press, "The great hits Whitney has given to the public for so many years--you keep encouraging and setting the bar. R. Kelly and Whitney just went into the studio with a great song called 'I Look to You.' "

I would suggest that might mean that these two might possibly get romantically involved, except that they're both way too old for one another. But in all seriousness, yay Whitney!!!

WHITNEY REHEARSES FOR CLIVE"S PRE GRAMMY PARTY!!!!!!! MTV CONFIRMS!!!!!!!!

Whitney Houston Rehearses For Comeback At Clive Davis Grammy Party
Jennifer Hudson, Leona Lewis also set to perform at music mogul's legendary industry gala.

By Shaheem Reid

BEVERLY HILLS, California - Every year on Grammy Awards weekend, Clive Davis puts his stamp on the artist he feels will be the next blue-chip performer under his wing. The nod has become almost as important as winning a Grammy itself. This year, however, Davis' biggest splash will be an act he discovered decades ago: Whitney Houston.

"She's rehearsing around 9 p.m. tonight," Davis said on Thursday afternoon, during practices for his legendary extravaganza at the Beverly Hilton. The music mogul - who has been Houston's godfather figure as much as he has been one of the people guiding her career - hinted that the Grammy-winning singer would have product in the marketplace sooner than we expect.

"You wait for the great songs to be written," Davis said about the long-awaited comeback album from one of his most prized prodigies. "The great hits Whitney has given to the public for so many years - you keep encouraging and setting the bar. R. Kelly and Whitney just went into the studio with a great song called 'I Look to You.'

"The same way her debut album took a while to put together, you just don't do it by going into a computer. You wait for the material to justify a new album," he added. "Pretty much, it's come in."

Davis said that Houston is going into the lab with hitmaker David Foster next week to record a ballad called "I Didn't Know My Own Strength."

Another very strong woman was on hand at the Beverly Hilton on Thursday. Jennifer Hudson was going over "Spotlight" with little body movement but still showing that her hiatus in the wake of her family tragedy hasn't diminished her pipes whatsoever.

"Oh, baby, I don't like it," she sang, getting more soulful toward the end of the song. "Living under your spotlight!"

"There's no mistaking that this is Miss Jennifer Hudson," Davis beamed. "Her voice just soared."

Clive and Hudson hugged after her rehearsal.

In 2008, when Hudson sang "And I Am Telling You" from "Dreamgirls" at the Davis party, labelmate Leona Lewis ushered in "Bleeding Love."

"There was something about 'Bleeding Love' and her digging deep and the edginess," Davis said, explaining why he picked the song as Lewis' first single a year ago. "There was no disagreement."

Lewis, who is working with Justin Timberlake on her new album, had fond memories of performing at last year's event. "To have Clive introducing me and debut here, that's having someone so amazing and prestigious in music ... it was great," Lewis said. "I think when Clive speaks, people listen. I'm glad I got the opportunity to perform. I'm performing this year. Clive's being celebrated. I can't wait. It's gonna be a great evening."

Davis' Pre-Grammy Gala takes place Saturday night in Los Angeles.

Will Lil Wayne grab all the gramophones? Is Katy Perry going to tell her girl rivals to kiss off? Can Coldplay march off with a win? MTV News is all over the 51st Annual Grammy Awards, so stay tuned for interviews, analysis and more before, during and after the big night, Sunday, February 8.

Ja mam jednak nadzieję, że występ Whitney zobaczymy w necie... wszyscy jej fani wiedzą, że ma wystąpić i przypuszczam, że nie jedna osoba nagra ten występ.
